Terra Motion announce the launch of the new division Peat Motion that will spearhead a new approach to Global Peatland Monitoring. Utilising patented APSIS™, an InSAR based survey method, Peat Motion are able to derive accurate movement measurements over all surface types and terrain which will help to improve peatland restoration and monitoring efforts.
Peat Motion have already conducted a survey of the surface movement of peatland areas across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Using data spanning a five-year period the resulting map has revealed, that from the 2.2 million hectares of the UK surveyed some 19% have collapsed by more than 2.5cm within this time. The economic potential of restoring these Peatlands is estimated to be worth over £500 million per year.
Andy Sowter, CTO, Terra Motion Limited, stated, “Peat Motion’s unique approach to monitoring the condition of Peatlands will empower landowners to unlock growth opportunities and support the UK Government’s net zero commitment. The size of the opportunity shows that together we can highlight the importance and opportunity of peatlands restoration to help us address the climate and nature emergency.”
